You can create stunning portraits by incorporating elements such as lighting, unique perspectives, different types of eye contact, and props as well as breaking the rules of composition. These portraits become unusual because its not a picture you see everyday and it really shows a lot about the person and who they are. No, none of these portraits are traditional because they are not head shots and they have a lot more going on in the photo. You can make your photos just as stunning and unconventional by going out of your comfort zone and being really creative with what you have in the frame and with how you take the photo. By using the elements mentioned above, your portraits will look a lot more interesting than a basic conventional portrait.

  4. One way to take a portrait is by having the subject out of their comfort zone. This can create a potential story to the image, and makes it unique to that one person. Another way is to shoot with different types of lighting. Things like side-lighting adds interest to the photo. Playing with eye contact is also another way to take a really cool portrait. In a usual portrait, the subject is looking straight at you. Having the subject looking at something in the distance, or looking at a prop allows you to learn more about the person in a way. Especially if they are looking at a specific prop! Altering the perspective allows you to tell more about a person by focusing on a unique area. Things like getting low to the ground and focusing on their shoes can give off the impression that they could be a runner or a athlete.Taking a series of shots or using burst can make a portrait much more interesting because it can capture movement. Adding movement makes a portrait unique because most portraits tend to be very still. Adding these types of elements breaks the usual idea of a portrait. If I wanted to make a unique portrait, I would usually play with perspective, and adding a prop.
